“The 1980’s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back.”
– Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States to Governor Mitt Romney
In a 2012 Presidential Debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney, the incumbent President cited a recent claim made by his Republican challenger stating that Russia is our greatest geopolitical foe to demonstrate Romney’s lack of foreign policy understanding. Just one election later, and it is clear Romney was correct.
While Al-Qaeda, ISIS and other groups, along with hostile nations like Iran and North Korea all pose threats, none are like the threat facing us today in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. The power and influence of this country, all around the world puts it as the leading contender threatening to challenge Western values.
To demonstrate how this is true, view this recent video uploaded by Vox. While there is no state in the international system as powerful as the United States, the West as a whole is at a critical tipping point in defending it’s values from the influence of authoritarians led by Putin.
